Cincinnati Reds Information and History

The city by the rivers has had a long history of "Red" baseball teams. In 1869 the first professional baseball club, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, was born. By 1876 several original Red Stockings players had jumped to the Boston club (earning that team the Red Stockings label). To avoid confusion, and perhaps to separate themselves from their former brethren, Cincinnati shortened to "Reds". Though twice in history (1944-1945, and 1954-1960) the team has officially changed the team nickname to "Red Legs," few writers or fans ever paid attention, still preferring the popular "Reds". In the 1970s the team was dubbed "The Big Red Machine" in a nod to their powerful, Hall of Fame-packed lineup.
