Houston Astros Information and History

A contest was held to name the Houston team when they entered the National League in 1962. Settling on "Colt 45s" (one of the coolest nicknames in sports history), the team almost immediately had problems with the label. The Colt Firearms Company challenged the team's use of the name on souvenirs and in 1966 team President Ray Hofheinz chose "Astros" due to the space industry's prominence in Houston. Their new home, the first dome to be used in MLB, was dubbed the "Astrodome". Their current ballpark, named "Minute Maid Park, is nicknamed "The Juice Box".
