Updated 1/21/05: U2 will kick off their 2005 world tour at the SAN DIEGO SPORTS ARENA on March 28. Kings Of Leon have also been announced as the support act for the first leg of the global trek, with tickets going on sale on January 29.
According to Billboard magazine U2 is set to kick off their world tour on March 1st in Florida to support their new album “How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb.” The band’s manager, Paul McGuinness, told the magazine the plan is to play about 35 arena shows in the U.S., head to Europe for 30 shows, back to North America for another 35 dates before finishing up the tour in Japan and Australia. Billboard also reported that Arthur Fogel, president of Clear Channel Entertainment’s TNA International, will promote the U2 tour. Fogel promoted the 106 show U2 world tour in 2001 which grossed $104 million. Though there has not been a final decision as to who will be opening for U2, McGuinness seemed to be leaning toward Snow Patrol when he told Billboard, “We love Snow Patrol. Their producer, Jacknife Lee, also worked on U2's album and they're Irish. There's a close connection.” The Scissor Sisters are also rumored to be one of the bands under consideration.
